WDR implements aixtream by ferncast
The German public broadcaster WDR (Westdeutscher Rundfunk, Cologne) is providing a wide-ranging selection of different radio programs in various formats to the German audience. In 2020 they decided to overhaul their provisioning of web streams and DVB multiplexes for all their programs by implementing aixtream software developed by Ferncast.
WDR chose aixtream software solution because it met all of their specified requirements:
- The option to perform all their internet streaming (Icecast and HLS) and DVB multiplexing on as few individual systems as possible to reduce costs and complexity of logistics.
- The ability to reuse the same signal for as many outputs as possible to simplify the workflow and operation.
- The possibility of a straightforward and secure backup setup.
WDR finished implementation of aixtream software in September 2021. Since then, they have been handling their internet streaming and DVB multiplexing workflow with aixtream servers. They are now streaming 36 different programs with aixtream software, including: 1LIVE, WDR2, WDR3, WDR4, WDR5, WDR COSMO, Selektor, Die Maus, WDR Event, WDR VERA. All their programs are available in multiple formats and quality levels. In total each program is streamed in at least 5 formats and qualities. HLS streams are available in 3 quality levels (using adaptive bitrate to adjust to the listener’s circumstances), while Icecast streams are available in at least 2 quality levels.
Ferncast’s software solution aixtream is a scalable software, running as server or VM installation. It is constantly being improved and new features are added.
